How to make shades out of old miniblinds

Okay I just found this blog where a lovely woman posted about how to make shades out of your old abused mini blinds. It is a great way to recycle and a cheap way to dress up your house!

The Playroom You Always Wanted

I think I might have to marry a contractor.

I was randomly websurfing and found this builder’s site. I don’t know anything about them other then the fact that this is the coolest play room any kid could EVER have.

I want it.

Your kids want it.

You’ll want it too. Trust me.

Home Improvement Classes for May

I think by now we all know I’m a big supporter of home improvement do-it-yourself classes. Even if you don’t actually do it yourself you should at least understand how something is done so you don’t get taken for a ride by your local handyman/contractor.

This month’s Home Depot classes include:

Tiling Floors and Walls- the #1 class at Home Depot and VERY easy to do. I just regrouted the corners of my own shower and I’m NOT a handy girl.

Outdoor Power Equipment and Maintenance- Did you know the standard tune-up for a walk-behind mower is $100? That’s can really bite a budget. The session includes setting up a maintenance routine (including sharpening blades) to keep your outdoor equipment out of the repair shop year after year. Also remember a sharp mowerblade can affect the health of your grass and re-landscaping is even more expensive then $100!

Installing Ceiling Fans- Summer is here for many of us and the weather is already toasty warm. One way to save on a huge air conditioning bill is to install ceiling fans in the rooms you use most. While they do not add a set-in-stone dollar value to your home, the added bonus to ceiling fans is that they’re a  fixture in your home and when you go to sell it buyers tend to like them. Win-win.

The class I’m taking? Repairing Screens. The ad says that window and door screens were actually designed to be repaired which is a great relief to me because I just punched a hole in my own window screen and scotch tape over the hole is not cutting it as a MacGyver-esque repair technique.

For those of us who prefer to learn at home with online videos Lowe’s has an entire library of information on all of these topics. Click HERE to see wha is available.

Just remember that materials are free at the Home Depot class and if you like to ask questions like me, the live option might suit you better. On the other hand if you need info and can only find the time at 10pm after the kids are asleep a 5-10 minute on-demand video is the perfect solution to your time challenge.

Lame Adventures at Home Depot

Okay, note to my readers. When you see something cool happening at Home Depot University like a Drywall class, you should register. And when you register, you should do so for the store you’ll actually be near at 2pm on the designated Sunday and not just expect to drop in on a random Home Depot 20 miles away because you were in the area. That store might not have a Drywall class. And it’s likely that the only guy in the store that can do drywall might be out to lunch.

But don’t ask how I know all this. *sigh*

No drywall class for me. I’m hoping they decide to repeat next month.

Cha Cha Cha (blog) CHANGES

Hi Everyone!

It’s almost midnight here in California and I’m just getting to my computer for the first time in almost a week. (*gasp!*)I’ve had a ridiculous computer virus and it has taken me FOREVER to try to clean it out. I ended up doing what all stubborn people do, I fiddled with it for a long time and then gave up and hired a pro. Thank goodness!

As for the blog posts you’ve been reading, they’re short because I had them pre-set with official publication dates a week ago. My intention was to go in and add to those posts journal-style but the virus pretty much made me too paranoid to even try to login for fear that I’d be the victim of password theft or some such thing.

Anyway, that’s all behind me and it’s on to the discounts! I’ve also had a week to think about how I can improve this blog. I’ve decided I’m going to go in a home improvement direction. There will, of course, still be discounts and coupons posted (I’m a junkie I couldn’t stop even if I wanted to) but I’m also going to be posting tips about keeping your living space fresh and new.

I don’t know about the rest of you but my family, friends and I are choosing to stay in a lot more. Now instead of meeting out somewhere we gather at someone’s house. That’s really great if you’ve got a place worth showing off but what if your space looks “lived in” or just plain tired? Then there is also the many handyman work around the house that we all need but never get around to…

I’ll be talking about those things here. Little suggestions to brighten up your space along with coupons and sale notices for where to do this on the cheap (yes, that’s still the theme, LOL!).

A lot of the tips you’ll be finding here are things I’ve discovered in my own home improvement adventures. It turns out my background as a klutz will have it’s advantages in teaching the blogiverse. Not bad!

I hope some of these help you all and if you have any questions feel free to ask! I’m always happy to share my knowledge of learn from others!

Heres to a great week for us all! (can you believe it’s almost MAY?!)

Happy Earth Day!

$5 off per gallon on BEHR paint

I’m clearly on a home improvement kick but I think with more and more budget conscious people choosing to relax at home we should take advantage of opportunities to create friendlier space.

In that spirit I was delighted to hear that BEHR pain is on sale for $5 off a one gallon container and $20 off five-gallon container at Home Depot. This is ONLY valid for purchases made from 4/16-4/22. Download your coupon HERE.

I read the fine print and there is no limit on the number of gallons. Also it is good for interior and exterior paint & primer, decorative finishes, stains, waterproofers and cleaners.

For this and more info check out the Behr home page. Click HERE. You’ll see a pop-up on the lower left of your screen with a link to learn more.

There is also an ongoing offer from HomeDepotMoving.com. Register and get a printable coupon for 10% off your entire order HERE.

Home Depot Classes! Take them!

I talked about this a little bit last month but I thought I’d reemphasize because this is such a wonderful way to save money. So many of us fear tile problems or plumbing issues because even the minor stuff costs a fortune if you have to call out a professional.

This month Home Depot’s classes include:

Installing Interior & Exterior Doors

Tiling Floors and Walls- Tiling is the #1 all-time most popular workshop at The Home Depot

Eco Options- Learn how you can make simple improvements around the house that have a positive effect on the environment, your health, and your wallet.

And the one I’m so excited about:

Repairing Drywall- Avoid costly repairs by learning easy and affordable techniques to keep your walls in tip-top shape.

For more information click HERE

I took the tile class last month. It was fun, it was hands on, and it was FREE! Let me know if you take one and what you think.
