Online Shopping Rebates…Genius!

There are two kinds of online rebates. First, there are the rebates you have to fill out for the items you buy in a store. Those are lovely of course. Then there are the OTHER kind. And the OTHER kind is what we’re here to talk about.

Do you realize when you buy something online someone is probably making a commission? If you Google a product and then buy it somewhere other people are profiting on your purchases and not just the retailer.

So how do you protect your money? Well in some cases it can’t be helped, but in many cases there is a better solution.

I think it’s probably best to show an example.
Have you ever stood in line at a bookstore and seen big stack of Entertainment books behind the counter? These books are filled with coupons you can use year round and I love buying them. There are all kinds of things in there. Free movie coupons, discount movies and museums, all the stuff I’m too cheap to do at full price.

Well, I saw the book in the store and thought I should buy one. I got distracted and didn’t buy it at the store. I’m so glad. I came home and looked it up online. Not only is the book half off now that we’ve reached March, Mr. Rebates was running a special. 35% cash back for buying it through them.

This isn’t the first time I’ve made a substantial portion of my money back for a purchase I intended to make anyway. I buy printer ink online (it will save you a FORTUNE), I buy purses online and gifts.

This is especially great for friends and relatives who live out of state. You have to send them stuff anyway right? Instead of buying them a giftcard, or those crazy refillable credit cards that charge you 6% interest a month, send them a gift and do it through an online retailer that will give you free shipping.

I put up a link for MrRebates since they gave a nice chunk of my money back. There are a number of other ways to make money back online listed on the left menu bar, I’ve joined them all because I want to know what the best deal is. Who gives the higher percentage back? It takes me just a few seconds to check.

Click the banner below to register (it’s free of course)

And don’t forget to search online to see if you can get things cheaper. In this economy every penny counts and money back is always a welcome reward for shopping smart.

$3 from Staples for recycling Printer Ink

Well, I knew this day would come eventually. We can FINALLY get credit back for old printer ink cartridges. Since I’ve got about 20 of them kicking around my house you can imagine how excited I was to find this out.

Click HERE for more info and note there is a 10 per month limit.

Also note that this only applies to name brand cartridges from companies like: HP, Brother, Canon, Dell, Epson, Kodak and Lexmark.

Edited to Add: They don’t just hand you store credit for $3 per. They take your Staples rewards number (you’ll have to register if you haven’t joined already). At the end of each quarter they send you a rebate check for the money you’ve spent including returned ink cartridges. Not bad!

Please also note that the $3 you get back for buying name brand is NOTHING compared to the savings you get from buying generic cartridges from online inkjet retailers though a rebate service like MrRebates.com or ebates.com

Upromise: Money for Education

My new friend Carrie over at Money Saving Methods told me about this. It’s brilliant really. The purpose of the organization is to harness your spending power and give you money back for it. That money then goes into an account and you can use it for your child’s college education. I don’t have kids so I’m doing it for my God children. For more info click below!
